Today I want to tell you about one of my favourite places: the sanctuary of Castelmonte above Cividale del Friuli. This sanctuary looks like a small castle with a medieval village that stands on top of one of the first heights that separate the Friuli plain from the Julian Alps: a really exciting place. A fantastic vision. Seen from above it is even more beautiful.
I have always loved this place which has been a destination of many car or motorbike rides since I was a boy. Climbing from the plain along the hairpin bends of the beautiful scenic road leading to Castelmonte already gives a beautiful feeling of peace and calm. Then the visit to the village with the stone lane smoothed by the passage of countless pilgrims and tourists, the square with the ancient well under the church, the centuries-old horse chestnut tree that rises solitary in plain sight to soften the grey stone walls, complete a delightful picture.
Around Castelmonte there are several roads and paths that lead to the surrounding hills and woods which are ideal places to relax away from the cities and traffic and where I often go in summer to search for a bit of cool air and in autumn to gather mushrooms and chestnuts.
