The appellations of Friuli Venezia Giulia: a mosaic of flavour and identity
Friuli Venezia Giulia boasts an immense winemaking heritage: hills, plains, sea shores and rocky plateaus give rise to diverse wines, each with a unique character. To help you navigate this rich diversity, there are the Denominazioni di Origine Controllate (Controlled Designations of Origin, or DOC), true seals of quality that describe the territory and guide visitors.
The Friuli DOC embraces the entire region, offering an wide range of native and international grape varieties. In the Eastern Hills of Friuli and nearby Collio, rolling hills and vineyards create landscapes of rare beauty, producing elegant white wines and intense reds that invite you to stop at the local wineries and historic villages. Along the river, the Friuli Isonzo DOC reflects the strength of its gravel, while the Karst region, with its limestone rock and bora wind, produces savory and vibrant wines.
In Aquileia, the DOC blends ancient history and viticulture, while Annia and Latisana showcase the winemaking vocation of the coastal area, with lagoons and the scents of the sea. The Friuli Grave DOC, home to Ribolla Gialla and Pinot Grigio, is found on the broad gravelly plains of the region's heartland, while the Prosecco DOC and DOC delle Venezie extend beyond the border. The Lison Pramaggiore DOC, shared with the Veneto region, unites two winemaking areas.
The very finest wines are concentrated in the Denominazioni di Origine Controllate e Garantite (Controlled and Guaranteed Designations of Origin, or DOCGs): Ramandolo, a velvety, amber-colored passito; Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit, a rare sweet wine; Rosazzo, a sublime Friulano; and Lison, shared with the Veneto region.
The Indiazioni Geografiche Tipiche (Typical Geographical Indications, or IGTs) offer freedom and creativity: TreVenezie (or ‘delle Venezie’), inter-regional between Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige, is a cross-border area; Alto Livenza, more limited, instead links Pordenone and Treviso with small cellars and authentic routes.
Visiting the Friulian wine regions is therefore a journey within a journey: each denomination is an experience that tells the story of landscapes, traditions, and flavours, transforming every glass into a discovery.
