Challenging loop trail to discover the Malghe to Mount Cjastelat, where you will encounter a unique landscape characterized by spectacular flora and fauna.
From the Piancavallo infopoint (starting point of the trail) turn left onto Via Collalto. Continue uphill on Via Collalto until you come to the electricity box on the left side of the road. Follow the signs Passeggiata delle Malghe and the red-and-white markings, entering the beech forest. Remaining at altitude, cross sinkholes and depressions. Skirt the sinkhole, keeping to the unmarked forest road. The road continues modestly uphill through the beech forest and crosses CAI 971, which climbs from Pian delle More. Turning right, you will soon reach the plateau, the meeting point of several trails. Enter CAI 915, which crosses a long-forgotten area of the plateau and skirts the Casera Dietro il Cjastelat area.
The landscape you cross is well worth a stop: meadows and woods that bear the signs of abrupt changes in the microclimate and strong thermal inversions. Mountain pines surround the valley floor meadows and beech trees cover the surrounding peaks. Roe deer, chamois, red deer, black grouse and francolins enliven the glades. Several times traces of lynx have been spotted.
The summit of Mount Cjastelat is at the end of the climb. Despite its modest height, its isolated location offers a vast, unexpected panorama. Descend from Cjastelat by following CAI 915 in the direction of Pala Fontana, along the wide ridge that opens toward the plain to the south and the mountains to the north. Past Pala Fontana, the descent begins surrounded by various blooms and breathtaking views. Pay attention to the trail. The CAI 915 trail ends at Forcella di Giais at the junction with CAI 988. Turning right, follow CAI 988 for a stretch until the junction with CAI 985. Keeping left on CAI 985 you pass near Casera Valfredda and then Casera Caseratte. Follow the red-and-white signs for the Passeggiata delle Malghe.
In a short time, the large sinkhole can be seen again. Cross the forestry road and resume the initial path to Via Collalto and finally to the starting point.
