A great classic in the heart of the Julian Pre-Alps Park that allows you to cross many different environments and walk on the border line with Slovenia. A stop at malga Coot is the perfect closure to this trail.
The proposed loop is one of the most rewarding routes for hikers with some experience already on their backs. Difficulties are never high but sure-footedness on rocky and gravelly terrain and absence of vertigo are required for some short ridge passages.
The starting point is at the parking lot below malga Coot, one of the oldest alpine pasture facilities in the entire Resia Valley, now an agritourism ready to offer delicious 0-km dishes and where to refresh at the end of the trail.
The trail runs through Alta Val Resia crossing many different environments: beech and coniferous forests, high-altitude meadows and pastures with splendid blooms, and gravelly and rocky environments under the walls of the Baba Grande and Piccola mountains. Along the way it is also common to spot many wildlife species such as deer, chamois, ibex and in the sky griffon vultures and eagles.
The summit of Mount Guarda, straddling Slovenia and Italy, is the point from which to enjoy the splendid views toward the Soča Valley to the east, and the Friulian Alps to the west.
A stop at theMalga Coot farmhouse is recommended, where you can eat excellent food and buy local products.
