Cammino Via Flavia

From the Bay of Saint Bartholomew, the trail climbs the hills. It begins to skirt the gulf from above, reaching Muggia, Dolina and the Rosandra Valley, where it turns towards Trieste and its coastline along a disused railway track. From Miramare Castle, the itinerary climbs the limestones of the Karst, continuing in the direction of Duino Castle and the spectacular cliffs nearby. It passes the mythical mouths of the Timavo River, the trenches of the Great War and Monfalcone with its fortress and shipyards. After crossing the nature reserve areas of the Isonzo River and the Cavanata Valley, the route proceeds towards the lagoon and the islands of Grado and Barbana. The journey ends in Aquileia, at the Patriarchal Basilica, an ancient cross-regional centre of deep spirituality. There are 115.7 km to be covered in five ideal stages on a route reminiscent of the ancient Roman road to Istria
