Butterfly Trail - long route

The itinerary presented can be undertaken from different points; the route starts from Mena (hamlet of Cavazzo Carnico) near the highway overpass, taking the forest road that climbs to the right following the signs for Monte Festa. Continue for about 2 km uphill through the forest; from here the view is lost in the panorama from the surrounding hills to Lago dei Tre Comuni and the nearby Pieve di Cesclans.

When you reach the fork that goes up to Monte Festa, go down to the right along the military road where you can admire the entire Val del Lago. After about 1 km, descend to the left along CAI path 838 where the hiker is guided by several explanatory signs that elaborate on the presence of butterflies endemic to the area.

It descends and reaches the village of Interneppo (in the municipality of Bordano). From the municipal drinking fountain (which has drinking water) you continue left (sign Sentiero delle Farfalle) along the main street and after about 200 m, after crossing the road you descend along the Interneppo Botanical Park path. Here it is possible to encounter several species of botanical interest and the headquarters of the Val del Lago Ecomuseum. The trail continues along the Lake to the hamlet of Somplago. Crossing the road, from Somplago you go up to Mena along Via di Sopra and arrive at the starting point.
