Udine, Festival Suns Europe

On the first weekend in December, SUNS Europe, the major European festival dedicated to the arts in regional languages, also known as minority languages, took place in Udine and in some neighbouring towns.

As specified in the programme brochure, however, none of these definitions can really describe these languages because diversity is a resource, and art it a way of promoting and enhancing it. SUNS Europe is simply a festival, an important festival of sounds, colours and creativity, conceived and organised by Radio Onde Furlane with the patronage of other organisations.

The radio station, based in the capital city of Friuli, has been broadcasting cultural programmes in the Friulian language since the 1980s and has always been the driving force behind the event.

The name SUNS comes from the Friulian word “suns”, which means “sounds”. Originally a festival of songs in minority languages, in recent years the event has developed to become an event that not only embraces music but also art in all its forms: theatre, films and literature.
The highlight of the festival took place at the Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine, when the finalists of the music competition performed on stage.
Here, as at all festivals, there were winners.

For the music section, the International Jury Prize was awarded to the Catalan duo JANSKY, whereas the Audience Prize went to Martina Iori, from the Val di Fassa, who sings in the Ladin language.

The first prize in the film section was awarded to Amama (The Grandmother), a feature film by the Basque director Asier Altuna.

Finally, the event was an important showcase for promoting our territory. The delegations attending had the opportunity to appreciate the welcoming hospitality of the Friulians and enjoy some genuine experiences.

We look forward to seeing you next year! “Us spietin il prossim an!”
