Looking at Trieste from above: a visit to the Faro della Vittoria

The Faro della Vittoria (literally the ‘Victory Lighthouse’) is on one of the most panoramic points of the city, from which you can enjoy a spectacular view of Trieste and the sea. The lighthouse was designed by Arduino Berlam and inaugurated in 1927. It was built with a dual purpose: to act as a beacon for navigation and to commemorate the fallen at sea during the First World War. If you are in Trieste, I really recommend you go and visit: the visit is free!

The Faro is located just outside the town centre, in the Gretta district above the Barcola seafront, but it is not difficult to reach even without a car. Buses leave from Piazza Oberdan (buses 42 and 44), and in just a few minutes lead right past the entrance to the Faro della Vittoria. The lighthouse is about 67 metres high but being located at a height of 125 metres above sea level, it offers a truly amazing panoramic view of Trieste.

The climb is not particularly difficult, because you can take advantage of the lift, thus avoiding the spiral staircase that instead allows to climb it on foot. Once at the top you will certainly be amazed, as happened to me, by the sight that you find before your eyes. On one side, the city centre of Trieste, on the other Barcola and Miramare and in front of you the vastness of the sea. If you are lucky, on a day when the sky is particularly clear, you will also see the coasts of Slovenia and Croatia to the east and in the distance on the other side the outline of the Alps.
