The “Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli” or Mosaic School of Friulihas a very different appearance to a normal school and the unusual noises that come from the classrooms emphasise this feeling. What I am speaking of is the repeated tapping of hammers on the cutting board, the typical tools of the mosaicist, indispensable for carving and modelling the individual pieces that will then compose the final work.
Even the terrazzo floors and the walls covered with colourful mosaics give further proof of not being in a school like many others. Here art and craftsmanship come together in a happy union, in the name of tradition and the ability to experiment with new styles and materials. It is a school that is open to the future and has solid foundations in the cultural roots of Friuli and in particular of the territory of Spilimbergo, where it was founded in 1922.
I think people are really lucky to study at the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli and to be one of the 80 students from all over the world who attend and complete the three-year course, after which the most deserving students are given the prestigious title of Master artisan. Watching them at work gives the idea of ??how much care, inventiveness and elegance are necessary to produce a mosaic of quality that demonstrates their artistic talent.
Only in this way can the student becomes a craftsman and transform this art into a noble profession.
I'm a slow tourist, with a backpack and map at my fingertips. I love cinema and old movies. I collect photos and extraordinary stories of ordinary people. Friuli is a mix of plain, sea and mountain, where special places are just around the corner.
