Aquileia, a treasure chest

The Bichinas Palio or race takes place in Forni di Sopra and is an event organised by volunteers that evokes past times, when the villagers used to transport wood and hay on large wooden sleds locally called “Bichinas”. Once upon a time, using these “Bichinas”, they would descend from the high pastures and malghe, sliding towards the valley on the wet grass or in the snow.
In the promotional run held on 4 January, however, the ‘cargo’ was a child sitting on a large sledge pulled or pushed by two adults. Twenty teams, made up of inhabitants of the valley and guests, competed along the streets of the historic centre in front of a large crowd, following a timed route.
