The Malghe Tour from Polcenigo

I would like to share with you a splendid circular tour to follow on a mountain bike, starting and arriving in the square of the beautiful village of Polcenigo.

You start from the fountain in Piazza Plebisicito and turn right into Via Coltura. Continue along Via San Michele. At the end of the asphalt road the climb begins on the Masaret dirt track, which is about 5 km long. The average slope on this stretch is about 9%. The first place you come to is Lama di Som at an altitude of about 600 metres.

You continue to climb on the most demanding stretch with some steep slopes in concrete where the gradient exceeds 20%. The landscape changes: here you go through woods of beech and fir trees. At 999 metres, you reach the Malga Pizzoc. We then continue on the Malghe road where dirt tracks and concrete roads alternate. This is the dorsal linking the Cansiglio to Piancavallo. A few more steep bits and we arrive at the Malga Costa Cervera. Here it is worth taking a break at the dairy to enjoy a good cheese with polenta accompanied by a glass of wine.

On clear days the view extending over the mountains of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Gulf of Trieste is spectacular, with the gaze stretching as far as Croatia. A little further on at the junction for the Candaglia - Col dei Scios, - the descent begins towards Mezzomonte. Going down to the village, turn left before reaching the cemetery. The track rises slightly to dive into the wood of chestnut trees and then leads down to the “old road” to Mezzomonte. From the village you descend the asphalt road until you return to the square in Polcenigo.

The tour is about 40 km along with a height difference of 1,400 metres. To tackle it with a mountain bike or a gravel you have to be quite fit. For the less fit, the route can be easily tackled on an e-bike. In every season the landscape presents a spectacle of colours. If you want to visit the Malghe (dairies), you must come between June and September. The minimum journey time is about 4/5 hours. There are at least three fountains on the way where you can get water.
