The Fusine Lakes are certainly one of the most well-known natural wonders of Friuli Venezia Giulia: it was a surprise for me to rediscover them in a new way, via a hiking circuit that embraces the spectacle of the two lakes and the rocky mass of the Mangart massif which looks silently down from the Italian-Slovenian border.

Parking the car just before the lower lake, we take the marked trail 512 towards the Zacchi mountain hut; the path immediately heads into the dense forest, and soon the noise of the tourists crowding the lakes become a distant memory.

The trail rises fast on the ridge, well marked both as a CAI path and with indications for the Alpe Adria Trail towards Kranjska Gora, nearby in Slovenia. After the first half hour of walking, arriving on the ridge, the woods thin out and the view that awaits us is a perfect reward for the effort: the two lakes are right below us, in a blend of green, azure and blue.

La via scende in direzione del Rifugio Zacchi (che riapre l'8 dicembre per la stagione invernale), in un percorso sicuro e ben tenuto tra bosco e roccia.

La tappa per l’ora di pranzo è al crocevia del Rifugio, dove gli avventori dello Zacchi seguono felici il suggerimento dell’insegna in entrata: staccate il telefono (tanto lassù il campo è quasi inesistente), abbiate un po’ di pazienza (dopotutto non siamo in un ristorante stellato) e, soprattutto, godetevi lo spettacolo!

Il nostro viaggio non è ancora finito e proseguiamo verso il sentiero 513 in direzione Alpe Vecchia: tra gli arbusti ci avviciniamo al cospetto del Mangart, per poi proseguire verso il tratto ghiaioso che raggiunge il bivio Bivacco Nogara: lungo la via incontriamo i sentieri che portano verso le vie ferrate ma, dopo ormai 3 ore e mezza di cammino, decidiamo di portare a termine il nostro anello scendendo verso la Malga Alpe del Lago, dove gli animali dell’alpeggio ci accompagnano lungo l’ultimo tratto di sentiero.

Ben presto siamo di ritorno ai Laghi, immersi nel sole del pomeriggio: è tempo di lasciare libero il nostro parcheggio ai prossimi visitatori in arrivo alla scoperta di Fusine.
