New discoveries in Sauris, a location in Carnia with its own dialect, dominated by the peaks of the Dolomites

Last weekend I was in  Sauris, the highest “Alpine Pearl” of Friuli Venezia Giulia. It was not the first time I visited this beautiful Germanic district, which is perhaps not very well known in Italy, but much appreciated especially for its good air, silence, gorgeous views, its well-known ham and excellent craft beer.

But for the first time I discovered aspects that were new to me at least: first I had the opportunity to stay in a wonderful attic and I felt myself a local of Sauris in the midst of their daily life, with the opportunity, for example, of listening to their local high German dialect. And living amongst them enabled me to learn about the daily life of a small farm, almost lost in the woods, where medicinal herbs and flowers are grown, which together with those gathered in the forests and meadows around Sauris become the delicious herbal teas produced directly by them.

As we all know,  mountain walks give a great sense of satisfaction and the great effort required is always rewarded with beautiful views, but discovering a splendid municipal wellness centre in the woods has made me appreciate this place even more. A splendid spa with pool and whirlpool has recently opened, and also offers a splendid solarium, a first-rate massage centre and a wonderful Finnish sauna as well as a hay sauna; the latter is not very well known in Friuli but is well worth trying. Very often, there is the possibility of participating in the aufguss with certified sauna masters. I love my region, I love exploring it from one end to another, but above all I like to discover something special and unique like this weekend I had in Sauris.
