By the seaside in Trieste: a dip in the city

Trieste is a coastal town; everyone knows that. But what you may not know is that here to go down to the beach, you head for the centre of town. We triestini are people who like to go to “al bagno” as they say here. In Trieste, this is taken to mean “allo stabilimento balneare” – to the bathing establishment – but in Italian it can also mean “to the bathroom”, with consequent bafflement elsewhere in the country. Every opportunity is snapped up to drop what we are doing and dash off to catch a little sunshine, since the sea is just around the corner. A few steps from the centre there are several establishments where you can enjoy all the comforts. There is the one most suitable for children, with a small pebble beach and low water, ideal for playing in. There is then the famous establishment where men and women have separate beaches. It is the favourite place for both the ladies and the men of Trieste, who have chosen to maintain this arrangement which is now unique in Italy and Europe: the beach is divided by a wall, but you can still meet in the water. There is also the establishment built on the old breakwater right in front of Piazza Unità, in the middle of the sea. You arrive with a little boat departing from Molo Audace.

But when speaking of Trieste and the sea, one must not overlook the most typical “bagno” in the city. It is free and runs alongside the road that from Barcola leads out of town. It is frequented by people of all ages, and here everyone can find the spot that best suits them: the shade of pines, a pebble beach or the famous cement terraces by the sea. A practical recommendation: for those who want peace and quiet, it is better to go to the first terraces near Barcola, because the last ones are the territory of teenagers: here there is laughter, yelling, music and diving. After the ten terraces, bathers continue to crowd the coast all the way to Miramare Castle. In Trieste, there are beaches for all tastes and the experience of swimming with a city view is unique.
