A day of fly fishing on the river Ledra

The first fishing outing of the year in Friuli Venezia Giulia is always exciting after the long winter abstinence and becomes a party among fishing friends. This year, we opted for the river Ledra, within the Ecomuseo delle Acque del Gemonese, which offers excellent fishing spots in the area near ??Artegna and Buja, where you can find great satisfaction in capturing wild fish such as marble trout and Blue fin grayling. My fishing friends and I practise fly fishing, which is considered an art form, and strictly observe catch & release: our flies, built in the long winter evenings, have no barb on the hook and the primary goal is not to wound the fish, and so enjoy our passion to the full in an environmentally friendly way. After arriving at the river, and a number of fruitless casts, a large grayling appears. I have to choose the right fly to “deceive” it and slowly I draw closer... with a precise curved cast I put the “fly on the nose” and with a twist he takes it. For the fisherman this is a moment charged with adrenaline for the fight begins: you have to tire the fish and slowly draw it to the landing net. In this case, it is a beautiful blue-fin grayling, a native to our region. After the ritual photo, I make it oxygenate to give it some strength back and let it return to its natural habitat... goodbye, friend!

The excitement and technique of this capture will then be the subject of colourful tales to friends, when tired but satisfied, we meet in an inn for a glass of excellent wine accompanied by a crispy and firm frico (a wafer of shredded cheese and potatoes), looking forward to the next adventure.

Where to stay

I have many passions: photography, cooking... but the biggest is fly fishing. For me it represents a lifestyle: an immersion into nature and its contemplation, respect and protection of the environment, the search for perfection in fishing techniques. My motto is: fish forever, work whenever!
