Discovering the Oasi Naturale dei Quadris di Fagagna (Stork Nature Reserve)

It is a beautiful spring Sunday; what better opportunity to visit the Oasi Naturale dei Quadris di Fagagna (UD)! This is the undisputed realm of the white storks, which every year choose this area in which to build their nest at dizzying heights, mate and rear their chicks before resuming for migration for the winter.

The entrance to the oasis

The oasis is a territory that has much to tell: until the mid-twentieth century, in fact, these square parcels of land (the Quadris) were used for the extraction of peat. Once this activity ended, Nature again took over this area of water and marsh vegetation that has since become a paradise for many bird species. Today, with the entrance ticket, you can walk around the large pools where many duck families reside, make friends with the Hermit Ibis, which in spite of its name, is rather sociable and even nibbles at the fingers of children who draw near.

Here you can also observe the wild horses that roam free and of course discover the interesting habits of the storks. For example, did you know that they have no voice and to say greet each other they chatter rapidly with their beak, producing a clacking sound?

The oasis is open from March to November. It is possible to organise a picnic in the equipped area and this is a great experience for adults, but even more so for children because they have the opportunity to enjoy a carefree experience in contact with Nature, learning to respect and love animals and the environment.
