Marano Lagunare, a small town with Venetian features
A relaxing walk on a Saturday morning in spring in charming Marano Lagunare, a small town that is far less famous than Lignano Sabbiadoro and Grado, but is actually the most fascinating and least spoilt of the lagoon, just a stone's throw from the mouth of the river Stella.
It is a sleepy town, where life runs placidly. Locals here have always exploited the potential that comes from the sea. The Venetian influence can be seen in the buildings, starting in the city centre, in the Piazza dei Provveditori, where much of the town’s life takes place.
Here you will find the Loggia Maranese and the Tower Millenaria, standing 32 metres high and used in the past as a watchtower. Exactly in front of the Tower there is the Palazzo dei Provveditori. You cannot miss the historic Maruzzella (fish-canning) factory and the splendid square with the Vecchia Pescheria (old fish market) right next to the lagoon, which is another meeting place for locals.
Several boat tours and trips depart from this square and wander lazily through the lagoon, amidst canals and casoni (the local thatched houses on lagoon islands), towards the mouth of the river Stella, where it is possible to admire some beautiful views, immersed in unspoiled nature.
