The pass and lake of Volaia

Immersed in a majestic setting between Monte Coglians, the highest peak in Friuli with its 2780 metres, and the gleaming eye of the alpine Volaia lake. Climbing from Forni Avoltri, after passing the mountain villages of Collinetta and Collina, where some very good coffees are to be had, we continue towards the Tolazzi mountain hut. We walk in the midst of beautiful mountain flowers, with lots of Turk’s cap lilies, tiny scented carnations, rhododendrons, dwarf pines and gentians, offering an explosion of colours and balsamic fragrances. At the Lambertenghi mountain hut, some beautiful stylised little cairns lead up the rugged cliff. After a few minutes we are on the Volaia Pass, with its lake of cold water. Water is always an attraction for adults and children. Time for photos, a short food break, relaxation and off we go once more. Back in the valley, an excellent cream puff awaits at Comeglians and Maranzanis, and a surprise too: a natural revitalising massage for the feet in the spring along the nature trail, the unexpected gift from a native of the location.

Where to stay

Cristina Pesamosca

Mountains, via ferratas, watercolour painting, photography, homemade lavender oil, budding soap-maker, felt. The world of nature makes me feel good and I love it. I happily run a B&B in Carnia.
