Villa Dolfin, a fairytale atmosphere

Take a spring afternoon, a varied group of foreign guests and Villa Dolfin, one of the most important Venetian villas in the region. The perfect ingredients for a magical afternoon in the district of Rorai Piccolo, which is barely a kilometre from the centre of Porcia and includes this wonderful villa that perhaps you’ve heard about. It’s certainly not any old place; this villa is one of the most important in Friuli. A leap back into the 17th century for an amazing atmosphere as we explore a bygone age.

The exterior conveys the surprising charm of this architecture. It’s hard not to fall in love with it. This place of rare beauty is now enjoying new glory thanks to Porcia town council, the current owner, which has restored most of the building. The barchessa wing, with an elegant Doric colonnade, now houses the celebrated Salvador Gandino music school. The villa is set in vast parkland spreading over some six hectares (14.5 acres). Each year in May the grounds host the staging of a thrilling re-enactment of the Battle of Sacile in 1809 during the Napoleonic Wars.

I was born in this village and was always intrigued by this majestic, mysterious place. Now the park is open to the public but if you want to visit the villa, too, you can book a guided tour accompanied by expert volunteers. It’s an idea for a day out not too far from home but nonetheless with the poetry of experiencing a waking dream in a fairytale atmosphere. It’s really worth a visit. Our guests were thrilled; if you’re in the area you mustn’t miss it.
