Grado in the winter

Grado in the winter

When you work in the mass retailing sector your “Sunday off” can sometimes fall on a Thursday and you find yourself savouring little morsels of freedom, even when you’d prefer the full meal. While looking for somewhere to “wind down”, but close at hand, Grado turned out – almost by chance – to be the solution. My hideaway where I could let my thoughts fun free across the sweeping view of a placid horizon

It doesn’t matter if it’s off season: Grado’s streets and buildings on a human scale, the gentle bobbing of sailing boats at anchor in the little harbour and the squeaking of seagull-topped rigging create that peaceful atmosphere of the winter months. But without the air of bleak desolation you might imagine at first. Of course, it’s very different from its summer version, when the avenues of the Rose Park are filled with the perfumes and sounds typical of the seaside, but, despite that, it always offers me moments of quiet happiness: sinking into the sand in my boots, breathing the salty sea breeze, exchanging a few words with another occasional visitor as their dog yaps excitedly at the little ripples breaking on the sand.

Lastly, it bids me farewell with breathtaking sunsets, perhaps while I’m relaxing in the pool of one of the many spas open all year round and feeling reinvigorated after an unexpected afternoon and the warmth of a herbal tea, as the evening brings this unforgettable day to a close.

I was born in Trieste, where I went to art school, then in 2004 I left my job with the La Contrada repertory theatre and moved. I work in the mass retailing sector but I still love the world of culture and exploring my surroundings. I indulge my passions by singing in a gospel choir and writing.
