Gorizia, the Isonzo Karst and the Collio area

Surrounded by lovely hills and crossed by the Isonzo River, Gorizia is an historically fascinating town. Inhabited since the Middle Age, it enjoyed a strong growth in the following centuries, when it became the main town of its County under the Habsburg Empire. During the nineteenth century, it was a resort town for the Viennese bourgeoisie due its mild climate, so much that it was known as the "Nice of the Adriatic Sea".
