On the western side of Mt. Pal Piccolo, the Austro-Hungarians developed a defensive system to guard the border, also known as "Machine guns nose". Their objective was to protect the Pass of Monte Croce Carnico against possible Italian attacks from all sides.
To visit this defensive system, you must walk through a trail section characterized by a system of sheltered walkways and tunnels, surrounded by some shelter-caves, machine gun pits protected by trenches and the remains of a barrack. Thanks to the restoration work carried out by the Association Dolomitenfreunde (Friends of Dolomites) in 1983, the visit is integrated by some information panels that help visitors understand aims and use of these military installations.
