After a 12 km drive on the military road, you reach the village of Stavoli di Plans, where, on the left, you can see the ruins of some buildings used by soldiers who presided over this area during the war. Leave your car here and, after a short walk up to the left turn before the fourth tunnel, you will see the entrance of the entrenched system of the Plans defensive line.
It is a long construction lying across the valley with sheltered positions for riflemen and tunnels. The military road descends to the Dogna stream and then climbs uphill to the other side, blocking a possible passage to the west. Designed in the early 900's, it was included in the eastern border defensive system against a possible breakthrough of the Austro-Hungarian troops along the Saisera Valley. Although completed only in 1917, this structure was repeatedly visited by several military delegations due to its importance and highly innovative design.
Thanks to restoration work, today we can walk through the tunnel and trenches located on the right side of the valley (where the road stretches) and visit the entire network of tunnels and positions.
