Altar of the Third Army

The top of Colle di San Giusto offers the chance of taking a journey through the history of Trieste. In a few metres, in fact, you can find Roman, medieval, modern and contemporary artefacts, the latter being represented by the Altar of the 3rd Army, inaugurated in 1929 by its Commander, the Duke of Aosta Emanuele Filiberto.

It is a monument in white stone supported by a pedestal, designed by architect Carlo Polli. It bears several wordings engraved in stone, such as the inscription "Victory was here consecrated by the Third Army under the command of Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy" on its four sides, or "Isonzo" and "Piave", the two rivers symbolising the Great War, where the Third Army operated. The altar panes, instead, show guns, machine-guns and two shields in classic style.
