I think that each of us should at least once in our lifetime go to pay homage to these places that, despite the wounds inflicted by man, retain a beauty, a dignity and a magic that is difficult to explain in words.
Erto vecchia and Casso are two villages where the clock jas stopped; walking along their narrow lanes means going back 60 years and you cannot but note the feeling of calm and serenity that clashes with the suffering that these places have experienced.
Of course, a visit to the Vajont dam and museum, perhaps accompanied by one of the fantastic local guides, is a must; this is the only way to understand the dimensions of the 1963 tragedy, when half the mountain slipped into the reservoir and caused a flood that devastated these two villages and the valley beneath, killing almost 2,000 people.
Spending a day in these places is a strong, profound but essential experience to understand what suffering, dignity and beauty mean.
A father with a passion for photography and video-making, I enjoy spending time in the outdoors with friends and organising events. Sufficiently touchy, and I’m easily bored… but never when I travel around my region.
