Verzegnis

Verzegnis lies on a plateau rich in orchards, beeches and chestnuts and is one of Carnia's 28 municipalities.

The etymology of Verzegnis is uncertain, however it is rather obvious to point out that it may be nothing but the phrase "verza e gnaus" (literally "savoy cabbage and turnips" in the dialect of Carnia), so that its origin may refer, for instance, to the products of a possible cultivation that prevailed in the area in the past.

Its territory extends over the right bank of the Tagliamento, stretching west up to the top of the mount.

Interesting historical evidence of the ancient role of Verzegnis in Carnia is provided by the ruins of a tower (on the Mazeit hill, in the hamlet of Villa) brought to light by archaeological excavations.

In the surroundings there are many trails for walking and hiking, such as to the "Acqua del paradiso" spring or to the "Grotta del Magico Alverman", one of the biggest caves on Mount Verzegnis suitable for speleology.
