Tarvisiano and Canin
Three borders
Tarvisio is an area of great valleys, stupendous peaks and a red spruce forest covering 23 thousand hectares, right in the north-east corner of Friuli Venezia Giulia, on the borders between Italy, Slovenia and Austria.
Mountains all around
The bracing air and and the vastness of the scenery can be appreciated in many ways: on skis, on foot, hurtling down breathtaking ski slopes, cross-country skiing through beautiful woodland or, if you want to take in the timeless beauty of it all at a slower pace, on snow rackets.
If it's the green of nature you prefer, there is a whole network of routes for hiking or mountain biking, with a choice of mountain huts offering accommodation.
Following in the footsteps of Julius Kugy
An amphitheatre of mountains, to the joy of rock climbers and mountaineers such as Nives Meroi, who trains in the 'Tarvisiano' area. Many of the peaks were unexplored right up to the beginning of the twentieth century, when Julius Kugy tackled them for the first time. The lesson taught us by this great mountaineer, who was also a botanist, musician and writer, was to live the mountains to the full, not just by conquering peaks, but by stopping, resting and contemplating.
Natural paradises
Nature has always been left to express itself freely in the mountains, and it does so here with great beauty, with blue lakes such as the Laghi di Fusine mirroring the peaks and tall pines and glimpses of migratory birds and deer. The Julian Pre-Alps Nature Park, is a veritable gold mine of nature and the environment, with a wide choice of original excursions within the park.
Sport and nature
The Tarvisio area has a vast range of possibilities for open air activities: nordic walking, dog trekking, rafting, hydrospeeding (going down mountain streams in canoes or rubber boats), golf, para gliding, snowboarding and sled-dogging.
In Pontebba there is an ultra-modern ice rink, for skating and ice hockey matches.
High altitude mysticism
A magical place, a delightful village and a shrine, Monte Lussari, visited by pilgrims from Italy, Slovenia and Germany.
Also near here is the Di Prampero ski run, one of the most exciting ski slopes in the region.
Traditions
The Krampus are terrible devils who roam the roads of Tarvisio on the 5th of December shouting and ringing bells to announce the arrival of St. Nicholas at the Val Resia Carnival. Also in Val Resia, a unique place where they speak a form of proto-Slavic that can be heard only here, there is the Museo dell'arrotino (knife grinding museum). A world of traditions to be discovered.
