The "Tunnels mule track" is the name given to a section of the trail stretching from the Austrian side of Mt. Creta di Collinetta back to Italy across the border. The name derives from two tunnels dug in the rock dating to the Great War period. Like other similar installations, they were erected to provide greater protection to soldiers who used to move along the mountain slopes.
The trail climbs slightly downhill and follows the south-eastern side of the mountain. Though not particularly exposed, it is recommended that you secure yourself to the steel cable fixed to the mountain wall.
The two tunnels are at short distance from each other. The first is quite short, while the second is about 20m long. In the middle of the latter, a gate marks the exact border betweenItaly and Austria. Before reaching the end of the hike and climbing along CAI trail No.147, it is worth making a stop and take in the wonderful views across the valley below and the peaks of Mt. Pic Chiadin and Mt. Floriz.
