Remains of observation posts on the summit

The summit of this mountain offers breath-taking views across the peaks of the Julian Alps and the valleys below. You can clearly see Mt. Lussari with its sanctuary and part of the Canale Valley with the Fella River as well as the villages of Malborghetto, Valbruna, Ugovizza and Tarvisio.

This spectacular setting was considered one of the most strategic points by the Italians in the years 1915-1917. From its 2087 metres ASL, in fact, Italian soldiers could clearly observe the movements of the Austro-Hungarian rear lines located northeast, along the Saisera Valley, and to the north, along the Canale Valley. With a pair of binoculars, you can also see the ruins of Hensel Fort on Mt. Tschalawài, right opposite the summit cross.

It is not a case that the remains of shelters, machine-gun pits and, mostly, observation posts can still be admired around the summit edges.
Unfortunately, many of them are in poor conditions due to their total abandonment. Yet, the walls along the summit are still partly standing and some observation posts have maintained their original structure. These are small spaces created along the northern perimeter of the summit and formed by cells provided with slits.
The observation posts face Mt. Piccolo Miezegnot nearby, which was occupied by the Austro-Hungarian troops and became the theatre of a 3-day battle (15th-18th July 1916), when the Italian army unsuccessfully tried to drive out the enemy garrison.
