Chapel of the Val Tagliamento Battallion

After a first stretch in the woods, the trail takes you to a meadow at 1428 metres ASL, where the Chapel of the Alpine Corps Val Tagliamento Battalion is located. Built in 1916, it was restored later by the Alpine Corps Association of Carnia in 1981. The small church was very close to collapse due to abandonment and the 1976 earthquake.

The small chapel was built with local stone and dedicated to the Alpine Corps battalion which had arranged a temporary war cemetery in this area. From September 1915, when the first soldiers were buried here, up to the end of October 1917, the number of graves reached 628. When the war ended, the soldiers' remains were first moved to the cemetery of Timau and then to a large Ossuary. Today, a few metres from the chapel, you can still see five tombstones bearing the 628 names of those soldiers in memory of the former war cemetery.
On the small lawn, once a sacred area, you can also see a number of panels showing some interesting pictures of this place during the period of the Great War and the 1930's. It is a good opportunity to understand where the old war cemetery was located.

The Chapel of the Alpine Corps Val Tagliamento Battalion is the first stop en route as well as where several commemorations are held by the Alpine Corps Associations, especially the Carnia branch, in June.
