Austro-Hungarian frontline

One of the most surprising and exciting features of this mount is to observe the extreme vicinity of the opposing front lines. About 10m from the "Italian large trench", in fact, you can see the Austro-Hungarian frontline, formed by a maze of walkways, trenches and tunnels excavated in the rock. Here, troops fought continuous enemy assaults and harsh weather conditions for over two years.

Thanks to a number of restoration and reconstruction efforts, these structures can now be visited in almost all their entirety. Moreover, you can access a fortified observation post, featuring a massive metal dome and some slits that were used by the Austro-Hungarians to check the movements of the Italian troops. A little further on, you can see the remains of the arrival station of the Austrian cable-car. It was used by soldiers to get equipment, weapons and supplies (sent from height 1215).

Besides several remains of the Great War, the summit (1866 metres ASL) offers superb views across Carnia to the south and the Carnic Valleys to the north.
