Museum of the Great War

The Museum of the Great War of Mount San Michele is located on an open space of the mountain of the same name, not far from Peak 3. It can be a great starting or arrival point of the visit to the open-air Museum of Mount San Michele but can also be visited alone.

Despite its reduced dimensions, for almost a century it hosted photographic exhibitions that showed the gas attack of June 29, 1916, the Karst scenery during the war period and the life of the soldiers in the trenches, as well as various objects including bullets, rifle barrels, gas masks and personal belongings.

Since June 29, 2018, the Museum has been completely renovated and today it offers a unique experience thanks to interactive multimedia content and tools (in Italian and English) capable of transmitting information and, above all, emotions.
In the first room, on the right, you can find two touch screens that will allow you to consult 2D and 3D content in interactive mode: the first screen is dedicated to cartography that spans the whole conflict and shows the changes of the frontlines through a time bar, while the second shows a 3D reconstruction of the gunboat of the Third Army and of the Grotta Lukachich (which cannot be visited today).
In the second room, on the left, you can see some exhibits from the previous exhibition as well as a video of some moments of the conflict of the front of Lower Isonzo.

The third room is dedicated to virtual reality VR 360: 15 VR posts with visors and headphones allow visitors to experience a real visit to the front of Isonzo during the Great War. Once seated you can see the trenches during the attacks with your own eyes, the moments of everyday life of the soldiers - both on the Austrian and Italian side - the care of the injured in the military hospitals, the tales of the war correspondents until reliving the tragic moment of the gas attack of June 29, 1916, and the overflight of the Doberdò Plateau on the plane Spad XIII piloted by Francesco Baracca.

The Museum's offer is enriched by increased reality, which is used in some points of the open-air museum itinerary through a mobile app dedicated to the entire sacred area that gives more information about the monuments, the itineraries, the Peak 3 galleries and life in the trenches.

Once you get out of the trench, it is worth walking all around the forecourt and heading to the rooftop building that offers a wonderful view over the valley of Isonzo and the city of Gorizia. Even today, looking at the landscape, you can guess the importance of this summit, which was an excellent location for the control of the territory.
