Memorial of the Sassari Brigade

This monument in honour of the Sassari Brigade stands in the middle of a clearing surrounded by a grove of pines and cypresses. Soldiers from Sardinia had a reputation for their tenacity (they were recruited exclusively on the island) and played a fundamental role in the taking of the Trench of the Frasche during the Fourth Battle of the Isonzo. Austro-Hungarian troops were highly impressed by their actions and nicknamed them the "Die Reute Teufel" (Red Devils), due to their red collar badges.

Originally inaugurated during the fascist regime, this monument was rebuilt and re-consecrated after WWII, in May 1950, during the National Infantrymen Convention in Gorizia.
The memorial stone on the top is highly significant. It commemorates those killed between 1915 and 1918 (thirteen thousand) plus casualties of war (eighteen thousand) and several military honours: 4 gold medals for two regiments (151th and 152th), 9 individual gold medals, 286 silver medals and 425 bronze medals.
