Memory Park on Colle di San Giusto

Located right in the heart of Trieste, Memory Park (Parco della Rimembranza) lies on the slopes of Colle di San Giusto since May 1926. In the middle of a green area crossed by Via Capitolina, the road leading to the hilltop, you can walk through this green area dotted by a number of karstic memorial stones bearing the names of all Trieste native soldiers who fell in war as well as their Divisions.

Several memory parks were created in Italy during the early years of the fascist regime, promoted by Dario Lupi, undersecretary at the Ministry of Education at that time. Inspired by the Freedom Tree, one of the symbols of the French revolution, Lupi invited all schools to dedicate a "sacred area" to those who had fought in the Great War. Therefore, plenty of such spaces popped up for worship purposes and also to exert a control over the memories related to the 1915-1918 conflict.

Trieste Memory Park is divided into 26 sectors, where the memorial stones stand. The stones dedicated to WW I are found between sectors 16 and 25, although here you can also see stones commemorating other battles, such as the Spanish Civil War, African wars and WW II.

We recommend walking to Memorial Park from Goldoni Square, crossing the spectacular Staircase of the Giants. Continue along a second staircase leading to an obelisk-shaped fountain inaugurated during the visit of Mussolini in town in 1938. Alternatively, you can reach the top of St. Just Hill from the area around Unification of Italy Square - Via del Teatro Romano, walking along the narrow and picturesque medieval alleys of Trieste. On the hilltop, walk thru the ruins of the Roman forum and then downhill along the pedestrian paths of the park to the fountain.
