Paularo

The mountaineering village of Friuli Venezia Giulia

Its development model based on respect for nature and sustainable management of resources and the environment are the virtues that have earned Paularo a place in the group of Mountaineering Villages since 2022.

The main characteristic shared by the 39 villages throughout the Alps of Slovenia, Austria and Italy is the exceptional quality of their natural landscapes.

Paularo is surrounded by mountain ranges, forests, meadows and pastures, each unique in its own way. The area is valued for its unspoilt natural landscape and the many opportunities for high-altitude hiking.

Hiking, trekking and walks

From the Zermula mountain range (2,143 metres), whose peaks can be reached by hiking trails, to the Mount Paularo group (2,043 metres), Mount Dimon (2,043 metres) and Mount Neddis (1,990 metres), with grassy slopes and peaks overlooking Lake Dimon below. These places are very popular all year round for their beauty and ease of access.

From the mountain group of the Cuestalta peak (2,198 metres) and the grassy Mount Lodin (2,015 metres), the scene of fierce battles during the First World War, to the Serenat mountain range, where there is the peak that offers one of the most breathtaking and panoramic views of the Carnic Alps, Mount Sernio (2,187 metres).

Walking through meadows, forests and alpine pastures
At the bottom of the valley and at lower altitudes, visitors can walk through forests that are home to Central European, Balkan and even Mediterranean Alpine species. Natural treasure troves where you can explore and discover priceless natural wonders, such as La Palme, an ancient multi-stemmed fir tree, roughly 180 years old, located in the Zermula forest, consisting of a horizontally bent trunk on which six other trees have grown, recalling the shape of a candelabra.

The high-altitude grazing lands, in turn, are home to the numerous Malghe, or alpine pastures, such as Zermula, Lodin Alta and Pizzul. During the summer months, visitors can enjoy dairy products and typical local specialities. The Dolce Valley, just above the Passo Cason di Lanza on the Austrian border, is also very attractive and easily accessible by car.

Places and charms of nature

In the streets of the town centre

A stroll through the town centre leads to the discovery of Calice Screm Palace, an architectural complex with characteristic overlapping galleries, considered to be the prototype of the Carnic house. Another attraction is the 18th-century Linussio Fabiani Palace, the residence of the family of Jacopo Linussio, founder of one of the largest textile companies in 18th-century Europe.
