Forni Avoltri

Forni Avoltri, the most eastern municipality of Friuli, lies along the banks of the Degano stream and is included in the wonderful area of the Carnic Alps.

It is an excellent starting point for several hikes to many high-altitude Alpine huts. It is worth mentioning the paths that, leaving from the hamlet of Collina, climb towards the Marinelli Alpine hut and the Volaia lake, next to the massif of Mount Coglians (2780 metres), the highest in the region.

The area is rich in fauna and flora and is protected by the Region. The town was mentioned for the first time in a fourteenth-century document, which granted permission of digging out some mines present in the area.
The road that leads to Pierabech, from which along a path you will reach the charming Bordaglia lake, situated in Friuli Venezia Giulia's largest wildlife reserve, is extremely pleasant.
Today in Pierabech marble is still extracted, a valuable variety that, due to its colour, is called "peach blossom".

In the latest years Forni Avoltri has acquired importance as a winter sports resort, featuring the International Biathlon Centre as well.

The Wild Berry Festival is traditionally held in Forni Avoltri on the last Sunday of July and on the first Sunday of August with tasting of cakes and delicacies based on wild berries, typical local dishes, exhibitions and stands.

Don't miss a visit to the Ethnographic Museum.
