At Zoppola, a castle worth discovering

I have always been a great lover of castles: you always seem to enter a fairy tale. Discovering this manor at Zoppola, not far from Pordenone, immersed in its own lush park was a real surprise! Usually closed to the public, I had the opportunity to visit it as part of the “Defigurazione - I tuoi occhi per vedermi” exhibition by Danilo De Marco via a guided tour. It is reached via a bridge that crosses the moat where the canal now passes, called Zoppoletta, and the castle stands immediately in front of you, imposing and majestic with its sixteenth-century balconies. Built as a defensive structure to protect against the incursions of the Hungarians, it has always had a considerable strategic importance, to the point of hosting aristocrats, over the centuries such as the Habsburgs of Austria, the Prodolone - Mels and Valvasone families and that of Cardinal Antonio Panciera. There was also a tower that was destroyed by the 1976 earthquake and the restoration that followed respected the original forms of the castle but the tower was not rebuilt. Today, the castle in a good state of conservation, thanks to the modernisation by the Conti Panciera who have embellished it on an artistic level with marvellous frescoes by Pomponio Amalteo on the internal façades of the courtyard, on the arches and balconies. The castle is currently inhabited by the Conti Panciera and is also home to a farm. It is an evocative place full of history and medieval charm that cannot leave the visitor indifferent. A little gem able to add a further embellishment to our territory.

Where to stay

Patrizia Causero

An untiring traveller, I adore immersing myself into my surroundings wherever I go and taste the local culture and food. I have discovered a strong passion for photography that enables me to see places that are the same but through different eyes. I love the smell of books. I am the mother of two children, to whom I have passed on the same passions and curiosity.
