Now that fresh snow has finally arrived, we must not miss going to the Sella Nevea ski resort, the undisputed queen of ski mountaineering, not only in the region.



It is a special place due to the amount of snow that accumulates there during the winter season, despite it being at a relatively low altitude: we can say that the snowfall on Mount Canin, at 2200m, can even reach 15 metres, a record in the Alps. And it is right on Mount Canin and Mount Montasio (the other symbolic mountain of Sella Nevea) that the most fascinating winding trails can be found for those who love ski skins. There are many trails to choose from with various levels of difficulty. In the photo, you can see the route to Sella Ursic but, perhaps, the most popular is the one that takes you to Mount Forato (Okno in the Slovene language), where the famous ski-mountaineering race is held on Mount Canin, which usually takes place in mid-April.

The views from these peaks are spectacular to say the least. You can see as far as the sea and on clear days you can even see Venice. On the subject of snow, in addition to ski mountaineering, at Sella Nevea you can also go downhill skiing along the famous Canin ski slope, which was where the Olympic Champion Sofia Goggia had her first win in an international competition (Super Combined European Cup 2012).



The ski lifts go up to Sella Prevala and link up with all the ski lifts that go up to Bovec in Slovenia, making it a single cross-border ski area. Other useful info points can be found at the two mountain refuges of Sella Nevea: Rifugio Julia in the village and Rifugio Gilberti at a high altitude. Naturally, you should always inquire about the condition of the snowpack and never venture out without taking safety equipment with you (avalanche transceiver, probes, shovel and a helmet).
