Trieste’s Jewish Community
The Jewish Community Museum “Carlo e Vera Wagner” is located in a building with a special historical significance: Via del Monte 5-7, in fact, used to be the site of the Jewish Agency for Israel, which helped refugees escaping from the Nazis; from Trieste, they would board ships towards Palestine or America. Before that, between the 17th and 18th century, it used to be a Jewish hospital.
The museum was opened in 1993 to protect this Jewish heritage and to make available to the public the large Judaica Collection owned by the Trieste Jewish Community. The museum was reopened in 2014-2015 and it extends over two floors, including a small synagogue with several religious items, a historical overview from the Middle Ages to the present, a memorial area for Trieste deportees during the Shoah, and a gallery of cultural personalities.
All the texts are available both in Italian and in English.
