Basiliano

Basiliano is a town in the plain of Friuli. Until 1923 it was called "Pasian Schiavonesco".

The area was inhabited by the Romans, who built some castles (for example in Variano, in Villaorba) for defending Aquileia against the barbarian invasions.

The area suffered many sacks during the whole 15th century, when the Turks arrived and set the town on fire.

Considering its position in a flat area, in both World Wars Basiliano was an important point in the deployment of the troops.

The municipality of Basiliano is made up of six small rural villages, immersed in the silence and in the quiet of the countryside and linked by pebbly red earth streets, characteristic of this area.

The landscape is characterised by stretches of cultivated fields where the four small votive churches stand out and can be easily made out thanks to their snow-white colour.
