One of the main problems during the First World War was the supply of food both to the civilian population and to soldiers. Battles, the militarization of territories and raids (especially in Friuli and in Eastern Veneto after Caporetto) brought about the devastation of crops and empty warehouses. Families in areas behind the frontline suffered famine and disease (such as pellagra) due to severe food shortage while the rations of soldiers became increasingly smaller and of poor quality.

The poor quality of the food was due to the decision to cook meals in zones behind the battlefield and carry them overnight to the front line. As a result the pasta or the rice in large pots would reach the trenches as sticky blocks. The soup would be cold and very often it turned… Read all »
