Toll booth and metal station

When you cross the river, you leave the Municipality of Ragogna and the Province of Udine and enter the province of Pordenone, in Pinzano al Tagliamento. This stretch of river is undoubtedly one of the most scenic, characterized by narrow rocky cliffs almost forming a gorge.

Such geological characteristics were duly exploited by soldiers, as they formed a great natural barrier against enemy incursions. Observing the rocks along the river, you can spot several military posts: some of them were part of the Vallo Littorio defensive system wanted by Mussolini to guard the northern borders (the Vallo used to run from the border with France to the Karst). Others date from the 1950's and are part of NATO defensive system against the Eastern bloc.

Other posts were instead built in the early twentieth century, such as the one covered by a metal roofing on a rocky outcrop at the end of the bridge, featuring several circular and square openings. The old toll booth is still visible near the bridge, both inaugurated in 1906; a toll was in fact required to cross it.
