The hamlet of Jainich, part of the Municipality of San Leonardo, is located long the spectacular road stretching from the sanctuary of Castelmonte to Stregna, in the heart of the Natisone Valleys. Continuing on provincial road SP31 without entering the hamlet, you will see a small ledge surrounded by lime trees, where the Church of St. Nicholas stands, a traditional alpine chapel dating back to the Middle Ages and restored in the mid-nineteenth century. Here, you can also see some remains of the Great War, in particular dating back to the frantic days following the defeat of Caporetto.
A number of crosses are embedded on a stone wall beside the church. They indicate the graves of some German soldiers who died on 27th October 1917 while trying to advance to Cividale del Friuli. Here you can also see a memorial stone and a tombstone in memory of the events that occurred here during the battle of Mt. Spig and the line Purgessimo-Castelmonte-Jainich.
