The war cemetery of Val da Ros is one of the few remains of the Great War in Friuli Venezia Giulia located in today's province of Pordenone. You can find it on provincial road SP55 connecting the Municipality of Clauzetto to the village of Pielungo (Municipality of Vito d'Asio); it can be seen on the left after one kilometre from the village of Orton.
The cemetery was created in the aftermath of the battle of Pradis (05th-06th November 1917), one of the many attempts by the Italian army to stop the advancing Austro-German troops following the defeat of Caporetto.
It was initially arranged by locals, who buried here all fallen soldiers (both Italians and Austro-Hungarians) and decorated by German authorities in September 1918. Once the conflict ended (as well as the occupation), the small cemeteries of this area (Pielungo and Forno) were dismissed and the remains moved here; this cemetery was re-inaugurated in 1920 and accommodated the remains of hundreds of fallen soldiers (including 218 Italian soldiers).
In the 1930's, with the construction of massive war memorials promoted by the fascist regime, all remains of Italian soldiers were moved. Now you can see most of the original Italian tombstones, some German tombs (marked by stone crosses) and a central monument (a pyramid featuring several memorial stones).
