Across the Trieste Maritime Station, you can admire a statue built in 1966 and representing Nazario Sauro, an irredentist sentenced to death by an Austro-Hungarian court in 1916. The work in bronze was created by Trieste native sculptor Tristano Alberti, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Nazario Sauro's death, who had also been awarded the Gold Medal for Valour. Nazario Sauro is mentioned, along with Guglielmo Oberdan and Cesare Battisti, in the popular patriotic song "The Piave Legend".
