In 1953, the architect Marcello D’Olivo created and developed an original urban planning project for the road network of Lignano Pineta: this led to the birth of the famous Pineta spiral.
The idea of the spiral was conceived to honor the principle of respecting nature as much as possible. As D’Olivo explained: "As you walk through it, the radius of curvature changes, so you always have greenery in front of you. All houses must be set back at least 20 meters from the road to blend with the vegetation; a central spine will contain all the general services of the center."
Lignano Pineta is a remarkable example of modern urban planning, and strolling through its streets, admiring the original villas immersed in greenery, still evokes curiosity today.
