Hiking route along the fourth stage of the "Traversata carnica - Via della Pace", from the Porze Hutte to the P.F. Calvi hut
The fourth stage starts from the Porze H utte and climbs immediately to the Dignas pass, located on the border line between Italy and Austria. From the pass, it climbs the ridge toward the Croda Nera and maintains its altitude with a long panoramic up and down with magnificent, aerial landscapes. Trail #403 accompanies you toward M. Cecido, which you pass, as well as Col Manzon and Vancomun.
At Forcella Carnia you leave trail 403 to descend a tiny valley (CAI128) that intersects the malghe road in Val Visdende. The route must be followed eastward reaching casera Chiastelin and Malga Antola after a long traverse. After also passing Malga Chivion, along a dirt road, descend below the western walls of Peralba to quickly ascend to Sorgenti del Piave. Near the polla the trail cuts across the slope to join the refuge service road (CAI 132) and reaches the P.F. Calvi refuge at 2167m.
The descent from Forcella Carnia to the malghe road is poorly marked, advisable to have GPS or a dedicated APP in tow.
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.
Water sources are absent along the ridge. The first fountain on the described route will be found at Casera Chiastelin. Malga Antola, in the summer months, offers agritourism service (refreshments and overnight stay) as does Rif. Sorgenti del Piave.
From the Porze Hutte the 403 trail markers guide south to the Dignas Fork notch where you re-enter Italian territory. Immediately to the left the trail climbs directly up the western slopes of the Croda Nera reaching the vicinity of the summit at 2431m. The trail proceeds eastward keeping close to the main displuvial continuing toward the Cadin col, Colle di S. Rocco, M. Cecido, Cima Salvades and passing below Cima Manzon and Cime Mezzana. A long ascending traverse in view of Mt. Vancomun precedes the arrival at Forcella Carnia, where route 403 should be abandoned to descend to the right down the small valley crossed by CAI path 128 (this section the trail markers are scarcely present, the directive is given indicatively by the course of the stream that should be indulged until almost the flat part near the malghe road, GPS useful).
Upon reaching the malghe road, continue to the left at length, in the direction of the silhouette of M. Peralba, still quite far away. At Casera Chiastelin you keep left, passing just above the building, following the signs for the malghe road to Malga Antola. With a long traverse, first uphill and then slightly downhill, you reach Malga Antola from which you continue on the service road to Malga Chivion. Keeping to the same directive, climb for a short distance to a wide clearing where, following the downhill dirt road to the right, you gain the course of the Cordevole stream, which must be crossed (easy ford).
A little further on a barely visible path on the left cuts up the slope for a short distance and joins the dirt road that goes up to the sources of the Piave (go up to the left). Upon reaching the Sorgenti del Piave refuge, on the left of the monument, a path climbs eastward below the walls of the Peralba group, shortly joining the service road to the Calvi refuge. Keeping to the wide path, still uphill, you reach the refuge - stage post.
Not present for the Porze Hutte refuge (possibility of transportation by dedicated private service).
The parking lot at the springs of the Piave River that precedes the last part of the ascent to the P.F. Calvi hut is served by a summer shuttle bus service by the municipality of Sappada; it is currently free of charge by reservation (prior verification of the service's existence at the Sappada infopoint is recommended Tel. +390435469131).
The Porze Hutte can be reached by dirt road from the village of Obertilliach in Lesachtal or via the Dignas Fork climbing from Val Visdende in Italy.
The P.F. Calvi hut is accessible from the Val Sesis roadway that climbs from the hamlet of Cima Sappada to the parking lot near the springs of the Piave River. The last stretch of dirt track is accessible only to authorized vehicles.
Normal hiking equipment.
