This project was born from
Roberto Gatto's desire to celebrate two giants of jazz history:
Miles Davis and
John Coltrane. It is not a simple reinterpretation of the repertoire, but a reinvention that filters the masterpieces of modal jazz and hard bop through the contemporary sensibility of an Italian all-star band. The encounter between Gatto's stable quartet and Pietro Tonolo's saxophonist voice creates an ideal bridge between historical tradition and new improvisational languages.
On the occasion of the centenary of the births of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, I decided to reunite my current quartet –
Alessandro Presti,
Gabriele Evangelista, and
Alfonso Santimone – with the addition of
Pietro Tonolo.
The idea is to bring together the two masters as they transitioned into the more experimental phase of their careers: Miles with his approach to electric sounds, Coltrane with his search for a more profoundly spiritual dimension. Albums such as Directions, Water Babies, In a Silent Way, Interstellar Space, Sun Ship, and Transition represent this crucial turning point in their artistic journeys.
A new challenge, therefore, in which we will attempt to intertwine two journeys that are only apparently distant, but in reality profoundly connected.
