La moda del recarsi ai caffè era molto diffusa nella società settecentesca di Lipsia. Recarsi nei caffè ai tempi di Bach era ritenuto dai più conservatori una cattiva usanza poiché dava l’occasione di fare incontri promiscui fuori dalla tutela familiare. A Lipsia, città in cui il primo caffè fu aperto nel 1685 (lo stesso anno in cui nacque Bach), lo Zimmermannsches Kaffeehaus fu dal 1723 il principale luogo di ritrovo in cui si esibiva settimanalmente il Collegium Musicum.
