Travis Bickle, ex reduce del Vietnam afflitto dall’insonnia, guida un taxi nelle notti più oscure di New York. Respinto dall’amore e consumato dall’alienazione, scivola verso l’ossessione e la violenza. Quando incontra Iris, una tredicenne sfruttata dalla prostituzione, decide di salvarla con un gesto estremo che lo trasforma, paradossalmente, in un eroe. Una discesa inquietante nella solitudine urbana.
